THE GAA will have to be ever-vigilant in ensuring players are properly looked after if they are to avoid falling into the trap of a semi-professional code, Kerry chairman Sean Walsh warned delegates at last night’s county convention in Killarney.

Player welfare has to be to the forefront of future planning within the Association and, in his view, it is “totally removed” from the debate for monetary compensation for players from gate money.

Nevertheless, he said that this debate would continue as long as their major championship games continued to attract large crowds.
