Cody Manager of the Year

ALL-Ireland winning Kilkenny manager Brian Cody was yesterday named Philips Manager of the Year at a function in the Berkeley Court in Dublin.

Cody edged out Tyrone boss Mickey Harte for the coveted accolade and was acclaimed by the packed gathering when he received the award from Cel O'Reilly, MD, Philips Electronics Ireland.

The St. Patrick's, Kilkenny schoolteacher, recently named manager of the Vodafone Allstar hurling team for their trip to Phoenix, Arizona in January, took it all in his stride but the big question centred on the three-in-a-row.

It's over 90 years 1911, 1912 and 1913 since Kilkenny last achieved the feat, though not all three on the field of play, so Cody knows it's a huge incentive.

He said: "The three-in-a-row is obviously the big incentive. The players will be motivated but it's a huge task, remember it's 1976-1978 since Cork last achieved the feat".

"To be honest, any one of six teams can win the All-Ireland and the biggest danger to Kilkenny are Kilkenny. I can't do anything about the other counties, I can only take care of my own. But I have no doubt that if we put in the work and play to a full potential we'll be thereabouts. If we don't we can forget it".

Cody added "This is a great honour for me to win this award. I have been involved with a very talented and dedicated bunch of guys. I owe it them. But I must also pay tribute to the real managers of the year, the voluntary workers who spent so much time preparing the youngsters. There're the real heroes."
