Club commitments and injuries force Cork to delay selection

Cork senior hurling selectors have delayed naming their side to meet Galway in the Allianz National League at Pairc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday until tomorrow night.

Club commitments and injuries force Cork to delay selection

This is because of the involvement of Na Piarsaigh players Sean Óg Ó hAilpín, John Gardiner and Ronan McGregor in tonight's county senior football championship, as well as a number of injury problems.

Joe Deane and Niall McCarthy, who were forced to cry off last weekend because of hamstring injuries, are given a "reasonable" chance of lining out at the weekend but Neil Ronan is not expected to make it after he too was forced out of the Clare tie.

Full-back Diarmuid O'Sullivan, who was forced to retire after 20 minutes against Clare due to illness, lined out with Imokilly in the senior football championship last night and turned in an outstanding performance. But Ronan Curran, who missed out on the Clare game, is suffering from flu.

Goalkeeper James McGarry, captain Peter Barry and Derek Lyng are all hopeful of being fit for Kilkenny's clash with Galway at Nowlan Park on Sunday.

McGarry has missed the last two games because of a neck injury, sustained during the Cats' warm-up prior to their meeting with Cork. Barry was forced to retire with a groin strain during last Sunday's triumph over Wexford, while Lyng has a damaged knee.

Frank Lohan, who missed Clare's victory over Cork because of work commitments, will be available for selection when manager Anthony Daly announces his side to meet Wexford at Wexford Park on Sunday.

However, Lohan will face stiff opposition from Brian Quinn, who excelled in the Cork game.

Paudie O'Dwyer is a definite non-started for Limerick's game against Laois at Kilmallock on Sunday. The Shannonsiders wing-back picked up a shoulder injury during last week's win over Dublin and is expected to be out for three to four weeks.

Waterford, who will select their team tomorrow night to play Down at Dungarvan on Saturday, report no injury problems and few changes are expected from the side that thrashed Antrim last weekend.

But Allstar Ken McGrath is still giving grave cause for concern as far as the Decies clash with Cork in the Munster championship on May 22 is concerned.

McGrath dislocated his shoulder in the opening game of the League and his fight to regain full fitness is reported to be "extremely slow."

Derry's Patsy Bradley is set for a dramatic recall to the Oak Leafs for Sunday's Division Two semi-final against Monaghan at Clones.

The Slaughtneil clubman will have served a 12-week suspension by midnight on Saturday, making him eligible for the re-arranged match.

The original tie last Sunday was postponed after incessant rain made the Clones venue unplayable.

Bradley was banned after a clash with Fermanagh's Ryan McCluskey.
