The match was marred by an unsavoury incident which saw punches traded between players, supporters and team officials.

Unlike in other counties, Clare's under-age board are responsible for minor affairs in their county including all matters relating to discipline.

Informed sources say that play was held up for about seven minutes but that was to allow the pitch to be cleared. The rest of the match went off without incident.

Commenting on the affair, Bord secretary Ann Hayes said: "We will view video evidence and discuss the referee's report tomorrow night and then take it from there."

Meanwhile Tim O'Connor, who got Limerick minor hurlers to their first All-Ireland final since 1984 when they were beaten by Galway in September's final has been reinstated as manager for another season.

O'Connor, from the Na Piarsaigh club, saw off the challenge of Bruff's Brian Finn for the position.

John Fahy of Croom has been appointed manager of the county U21 football team, having previously served as a selector.

The death has taken place of former Limerick inter-county hurler Derry McCarthy. He was 83.

A native of Dromcollogher, Mr McCarthy played with Limerick in the 1947 Munster hurling final against Cork. He went on to win three Railway Cup medals with Munster in 1951, '52 and '53 and also played with the Rest Of Ireland team against the Combined Universities in 1951.

At Club level he won three county JHC medals with Dromcollogher and numerous other awards. He is survived by his son John, daughters Ann and Mary, sisters Helen, Peg and Nora and brother John.
