Mulcahy in Cork line-up for injured O’Sullivan
O’Sullivan’s full-back berth has been allocated to Pat Mulcahy of Newtownshandrum and the selectors have also made a number of changes from the side that fashioned an exciting one point victory over Limerick in the opening round.
Cian Murphy of Erins Own, who escaped serious injury in a car accident on Monday night, is replaced at left corner-back by Brian Murphy of Bride Rovers, who played with CIT in last weekend’s Fitzgibbon Cup final.
Both Derek Barrett and Michael O’Connell, who were substituted in the Limerick game, will start again at midfield.
Jerry O’Connor, introduced as a replacement for Barrett and scorer of the winning point, will start at left
half-forward. Eoin Fitzgerald moves to right corner-forward in place of O’Connor’s twin brother Ben, who had a number of stitches inserted in a wound in a recent challenge match.
The Limerick selectors have left two positions vacant on their team to play Tipperary at Semple Stadium on Saturday.
Stephen Lucey is involved with UCD in the Sigerson Cup and Patrick Kirby is doubtful because of Dr Harty Cup duties.
Lucey will come in at midfield if UCD fail to advance beyond the
quarter-finals of the Sigerson today. Gone from the side which lost to Cork are Mark Keane, Stephen McDonogh and Mike O’Brien and they are replaced by Brian Geary, John Meskell and Donncha Sheehan.
Ollie Moran, winner of a Fitzgibbon Cup medal with WIT last week, continues at centre-back, and T.J. Ryan is once more named at full-forward.
Ahane, beaten county finalists last season, supply the entire half-forward line of the Moran brothers, James and Nall, and John Meskell. Sheehan and Meskell were introduced as second half substitutes at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
Charlie Carter will captain Kilkenny for the first time when the All-Ireland champions take on Galway at Nowlan Park on Sunday.
The recently appointed skipper missed the first game against Waterford because of flu, but with ‘hurler of the year’ Henry Shefflin ruled out with a leg injury, and Allstar D. J. Carey, sidelined with a broken finger, Carter comes back into the side at top of the left. Also returning is regular full-back Noel Hickey, who missed the Waterford game because of a knee injury.
Laois have made two changes from the side that crashed to Clare in the opening round for their home game with Waterford at Portlaoise on Sunday. John Lyons takes over in goal from the injured John Galvin, while Tommy Fitzgerald is introduced at top of the left.
