He was a member of the three-in-a-row team which was successful between 1949 and 1951, when team- mates included such legendary figures as John Doyle, Pat Stakelum, Micky (Rattler) Byrne and Tony Reddan. His brother Sean also played on the treble- winning team, captaining them to victory in the 1950 final. A third brother, Philip (Phippy) was also a medal-winner. In the ’50s, he won four Railway Cup medals with Munster.

He was a county championship winner both with Borrisoleigh and Thurles Sarsfields and, earlier in his career, played in three consecutive All-Ireland minor finals. Tipperary were successful in the third (in 1953), when he was captain.

The burial takes place after Requiem mass today at 10.30am in the Cathedral in Thurles to St Patrick’s Cemetery.

The death has also taken place of Willie Wall, a member of the All-Ireland-winning senior hurling team of 1937. Ten years later, he led Carrick Swans to victory in their only county senior hurling title triumph.
