GAC to widen inquiry into McCartan case
The All-Ireland winner is at the centre of a civil case following an incident last May in which Westmeath football Ken Larkin sustained a broken jaw during a challenge game between the counties in Newcastle, Co Dublin. The sub-committee of the GAC which carried out an earlier probe into the incident agreed to interview further witnesses following Wednesday night's meeting in Dublin, which was attended by members of the Down County Board and McCartan.
The GAC will also investigate incidents which occurred in the floodlit Allianz NFL game between Kerry and Cork in Austin Stack Park on February 7. This decision was also taken at a midweek meeting when it was also decided to investigate the row in last Sunday's AIB club hurling semi-final in Clones between Antrim side Dunloy and the Galway champions Portumna.
In relation to the Kerry/Cork game last Saturday week, the committee is expected to focus on two particular happenings, one in which Cork player Pádraig Griffin was red-carded after the referee consulted with one of his umpires. The other involved an altercation immediately after the final whistle, following which a Kerry player, Paul Galvin sustained concussion.
In Clones, on Sunday afternoon, a row developed minutes before the interval which involved players and mentors on both sides.
It led to Westmeath referee Barry Kelly yellow-carding three players.
