Bride prove stronger in battle of the Rovers

BRIDE ROVERS won the battle of the Rovers for Evening Echo Cork County SHC survival at Pairc Ui Rinn last night, the East Cork outfit beating city side Glen Rovers 3-15 to 1-13 to advance to the next round.

Already shrouded in sadness following the unexpected death of one of the famous clubs most legendary figures - John Lyons - Glen Rovers were plunged into further mourning by a far more effective Bride Rovers side.

Bride Rovers came up trumps with two spectacular goals from midfielder Brian Murphy in the space of three minutes during the opening quarter laying the foundations for their victory. The Glen did manage to mount a late survival operation but the game was conput beyond them following a third goal from wing forward Barry Johnson three minutes from the end.

Scorers: Bride Rovers: B. Murphy (2-0), B. Johnson (1-3), B. Hazelwood (0-5, 0-2 frees), P. Cotter (0-3), S. Ryan, P. Murphy, D. Ryan, T. Broderick (0-1 each). Glen Rovers: P. Horgan (1-5, 0-1 free, 0-1 65), L. Tracey (0-2), G. Callanan (0-2), D. Dorris, R. Kelleher, S. McGrath, D. Cronin (0-1 each).

SHARPER and more focused than last week, Carbery made no mistake in this lively eplay at Cloughduv, winning 1-16 to 1-10 and ending Duhallow’s quest for back-to-back victories.

Superbly led by Vincent O’Brien the youthful Carbery division always held the upper hand against a dogged Duhallow side that fought to the death. Sixteen wides will give Carbery’s food for thought though and indeed they might well have been stung late in the game when it took two terrific saves from goalkeeper Noel Coomey to keep the minnows at bay.

Damien Crowley scored Duhallow’s first-half goal as the trailed 0-8 to 1-4 at the break, but J.P. O’Callaghan, who notched 1-8, sealed it for Carbery in the 48th minute and they now go on to meet Cloyne in the next round.

Scorers: Carbery: J. P. O’Callaghan 1-8 (0-7 frees), K. O’Donovan 0-3, M. Walsh 0-2, G. Coleman, D. Lucey, J. Forristal 0-1 each. Duhallow: D. Crowley 1-3, F. Browne (frees), K. McCarthy. D. Duane 0-2 each, N. O’Callaghan 0-1.

WHOEVER meets Douglas next in the Cork Co SHC better beware as they enter the home straight. Because at Caherlag, for the second time in the championship, the city side stormed over the finishing line, beating Castlelyons 1-15 to 1-13.

Against Midleton in round one their late surge from a near impossible deficit just came up short. But here they were able to put Castlelyons to the sword - something which had looked so unlikely for much of the match.

Douglas, forced to lineout without Gary Wade, Willie Coveney and Colin Lahive, can thank the tireless Paddy ‘Bobzy’ Barry for still being involved in this championship for he was resplendent. It wasn’t just that he put heavy shackles on Timmy McCarthy, but he also cleared ball after ball, broke up attack after attack in classical half back mode, and did not look as if he would be out of place himself if he were to join the speedy McCarthy on the Cork panel.

Scorers: Douglas: S. Moylan 0-9 (0-7 frees), G. McGloughlin 1-1, M. Harrington, J. Moylan, T.O’ Dwyer and P. Barry (’65) 0-1 each. Castlelyons: Eoin Fitzgerald 0-8 (0-4 frees, 0-2 ‘65’s), D. Wallace 1-0, S. McAuliffe and Eamonn Fitzgerald 0-2 each, S. Barrett 0-1.

AFTER enduring their own share of heartaches, Youghal left Watergrasshill shattered with an absorbing 1-14 to 1-13 Cork County Premier IHC first round replay at Dungourney.

A stunning 62nd minute goal from Eoin Coleman decided an affair which, for so long, seemed beyond the victors. The ‘Hill led for most of the game having pulled clear by seven points after 20 minutes and deep in stoppage time were still two points in front. But, showing immense character Youghal held their nerve to rattle the net for the decisive score. For Watergrasshill, this was a tough experience. Nonetheless, they have plenty to enthuse about and will take many positives into their round-two clash with Ballincollig.

Scorers: Youghal: E Coleman 1-5 (0-5 frees), B Ring 0-3, D Ring and L Desmond 0-2 each, M Ó Laochda and B Coleman 0-1 each. Watergrasshill: J Foley 1-0, P Cahill and J Halbert 0-3 each, E O’Reilly and P O’Regan (frees) 0-2 each, S O’Callaghan, S O’Leary and N O’Riordan 0-1 each.
