O’Dwyer lashes out at product ban

LEGENDARY football coach Mick O’Dwyer believes it is a disgrace that RTÉ has banned GAA players from ‘product placement’ during post-match interviews.

O’Dwyer lashes out at product ban

O’Dwyer has urged Tv chiefs to rethink their policy of refusing to allow inter- county players “earn a few bob” from the deal with C&C’s Club Energise during the Championship.

“GAA players don’t get anything for doing interviews on TV after games, and that’s fair enough. But RTÉ needs to look at the bigger picture here. Some of these lads are only students, and many are forced to go abroad during the summer to pay their college fees.

The Laois coach made his comments in an extensive interview published in Arena today, in which he reveals that he will definitely leave Laois after his two-year term expires in 2006. He also ruled out a sentimental return to Kerry, but indicated he plans to continue coaching for as long as he can.

O’Dwyer, whose Laois side face another county he has coached, Kildare, in Sunday’s Leinster SFC semi final, was 69 last week. He also lauded GAA chiefs for the development of Croke Park.
