‘Striking incident’ in O’Byrne Cup clash mentioned in referee report
Wexford defender Colm Morris alleged after the game in Coolock that he had been struck under the chin by a person who he was later told was a Dublin selector.
The incident was brought to the attention of Louth referee Gabriel McKenny by an umpire.
The official took no disciplinary action, although he did have words with the Dublin bench.
“There was a vague reference to an incident in the report,” said Leinster Council secretary Michael Delaney yesterday.
“There were no names listed in relation to the incident, nor was there any mention of a punch being thrown. We have written to the counties asking for their observations on the matter.”
Wexford will hold their first Management Committee meeting of the year tonight, where the matter is expected to be discussed.
Meanwhile, DJ Carey has stated that he will be unavailable for Kilkenny’s NHL campaign.
The nine-time Allstar has informed manager Brian Cody that he will make a decision on whether to return once the first round of the county championship is completed.
Carey said he would continue to train on his own and that his absence from the panel would offer the chance for younger players to stake a place in the county set-up.
In Connacht, Roscommon boss John Maughan says he has no qualms about facing his native Mayo on Sunday in a winner-takes-all FBD Connacht League clash. Both sides won their opening games, against Sligo IT and NUIG, and the winner of Sunday’s encounter at Ballinlough (2pm) will advance to the final.
“It was inevitable from the time I took over in Roscommon that we would play Mayo at some stage, so maybe it is as well it’s happening now.
“The FBD League is a good competition and we have learnt a lot from the two games. Next Sunday is another challenge and presents another opportunity for players to stake a claim.
“We have been stressing the importance of winning to the players and we will be looking for a win on Sunday and hopefully get to the final.
“We are using this competition to prepare for the national league and then we will use that to get ready for the championship. It has been going good so far and we just hope to keep building,” said Maughan.
In the other semi, a draw will be enough for Dom Corrigan’s Sligo side to reach the final when they visit Carrick-on-Shannon to take on Leitrim.
