Ballyduff and Fourmilewater battle for survival in top flight

AFTER last Sunday's thriller, the Waterford SHC relegation play-off replay between Ballyduff Upper and Fourmilewater at Dungarvan tomorrow (1pm) is awaited with great anticipation.

The winners are assured of their place in the top flight next season, while for the losers there's only the uninviting prospect of participation in the intermediate grade.

Last Sunday's game was a mighty battle. Fourmilewater looked the more likely winners for most of the hour, but Ballyduff's late rally, even though reduced to 14 players, earned them a richly deserved second bite at the cherry.

Wing-back Michael Drislane was the Ballyduff player sent off for a second yellow card offence, but he is eligible for the replay and is certain to be included.

Ballyduff will again place huge reliance for their survival on Donal and Brendan Hannon, the Feeneys, John Twomey and, most of all, the man who did most to save them last day, Stephen Molumphy.

Fourmilewater sorely missed Rory Rice in the drawn tie and the expectation is that he will return either at centre-back or midfield. His presence will undoubtedly bolster Fourmile's chances.

They will again be looking to their county panellists, Brian Wall and Liam Lawlor, to lead by example and despite last weekend's scare they are still very much the favourites to garner the spoils.

Meanwhile, the remaining adult county final of the year also goes ahead tomorrow when Ballinacourty and St. Mollerans (Carrickbeg) meet in the junior football "A'' decider at Fenor (2.15).

This is 'Courty's "second string'' side and it's an achievement of some significance to have reached the final. They well and truly proved their credentials with a decisive victory over Old Parish in the West final and a repeat of that performance would give the man outstanding chance of lifting the title.

St. Molleran's, however, will be firm favourites following their East divisional final defeat of a Ferrybank side many fancied to go all the way. They have been a model of consistency in the campaign to date, and fully justify their favourites tag.
