THE GAA cannot run the risk of departing from its amateur ethic, warns Danny Murphy, secretary of the Ulster Council, in his report to next Saturday’s centenary convention in Armagh.

The issue now confronting the Association is not how they recognise the enormous contribution of their players, but whether or not it should retain the amateur status “that has been the bedrock of the GAA throughout its history.”

“The democracy and the sense of community that imbues the Association indicate that we depart from this policy at our peril,’’ he states.
