Hurley the hero as Blarney shock Ballinhassig

TWO games in the Evening Echo Cork County Premier IHC, two in the IHC and one IFC were decided over the weekend, with the pick of the games in the premier championship at Pairc Ui Rinn where Blarney beat Ballinhassig 3-13 to 1-15.

If the drawn game bordered on tedium, part two produced a classic, with Blarney toppling one of the favourites. Some superb passages of hurling peppered a remarkable contest that produced memorable scoring exploits, particularly from Blarney’s John Hurley.

He scored a litany of excellent points and his 21st minute goal proved crucial. Excellent goalkeeping from Ronan Byrne saw him bring off a hat-trick of incredible saves in last five minutes.

Scorers: Blarney: J Hurley 1-7 (0-3 frees); R McNamara 1-2; N Murphy 1-1; D McCarthy, D Cronin and E McCarthy 0-1 each. Ballinhassig: F O’Leary 0-6 (0-4 frees); B Lombard 1-2; J Mullaney 0-2; S Dineen, D O’Callaghan, M Aherne (65), D Dineen and B O’Sullivan 0-1 each.

There is no substitute for experience when it comes to championship hurling and Aghada had it in abundance in Cobh as a young and eager Bishopstown were outgunned 2-11 to 0-14.

Goals also win games and Pierce O’Neill’s opener in the fifth minute, followed by Tony Wall’s second just after the restart, always had Bishopstown chasing a game spoilt somewhat by the strong cold breeze.

Scorers: Aghada: T. O’Keeffe 0-7 (0-5 frees, 0-1 ‘65), T. Wall 1-1 (0-1 free), P. O’Neill 1-0, G. Melvin, R. Dwane, S. O’Keeffe 0-1 each. Bishopstown: P. Cronin 0-8 (0-4 frees), R. Conway 0-3, B. Healy, J. Murphy, S. O’Neill (free) 0-1 each.

James Masters was again the talk before this IHC replay. This time, however, it wasn’t good news for the Capwell men as he was forced off their starting selection with a leg injury.

However, any fears of a collapse were quickly dispelled as the Nemo supporters watched a side in scintillating form gallop home 3-14 to 0-13 winners, while at the same time they witnessed Ballymartle seriously wilt.

Scorers: Nemo Rangers: A Cronin 1-2, W Morgan 0-5 (0-4 frees), C O’Shea and J Coogan (pen) 1-0 each, M Daly and W Morgan 0-2 each, D Niblock, M Cronin and P Morgan 0-1 each. Ballymartle: B Dwyer 0-4 (frees), R Dwyer, M O’Mahony and G Cummins (65m) 0-2 each, P Coughlan, A McCarthy and C Sheehan 0-1 each.

Argideen Rangers’ forceful hurling secured them passage into the next round of the IHC with a 1-13 to 0-13 victory over Bandon after a throbbing replay at Enniskeane.

The drawn game had precious little. But this game will have many talking points, not least a few controversial ones, but the result was the right one.

Scorers: Argideen Rangers: M. O’ Callaghan 0-7 (0-5 frees, 0-1 ‘65), A. O’ Leary 1-1, M. Walsh and B. Hennessy 0-2 each, B. Harte 0-1. Bandon: D. Lucey 0-7 (0-2 frees), D. Burke and D. O’ Donoghue 0-2 each, N. O’ Rourke (free) and K. Hurpey (free) 0-1 each.

In the IFC at Carrigaline yesterday, Valley Rovers beat Delanys 1-14 to 1-9 in a game that lacked quality but had plenty of honest endeavour.

Unlucky to have lost to Mayfield in the first round, the Valleys took full advantage of the last chance saloon, though their victory was won in a game of more bump and grind than any semblance of fluent football.

Scorers: Valley Rovers: W Burke 0-4 (0-3 frees); F Lynch 1-0; M Kelleher 0-3; K Canty, S. M. Collins (0-1 free) and R Butler 0-2 each; D Lynch 0-1. Delanys: M McElhinney 1-0; G Quinlan and P O’Connell (0-2 frees) 0-3 each; M O’Driscoll 0-2; C Twomey 0-1.
