Lyon see off Nantes to seize advantage in race for second

Lyon seized the initiative in the race for second place in Ligue 1 with a 2-0 win over Nantes.

With Paris St Germain already confirmed as champions, Lyon are locked in a battle for the runners-up spot with Monaco and Marseille.

And goals in either half from Memphis Depay and Bertrand Traore sent Bruno Genesio's men into second ahead of Monaco's game with Amiens later on Saturday evening.

Depay opened the scoring in fine style as he lashed home from 20 yards six minutes before the break and the former Manchester United man made the second midway through the second half when his surging run allowed Traore to sweep home.

Roma thrash Chievo ahead of Liverpool clash

Roma warmed up for their Champions League second leg with Liverpool by hammering Chievo 4-1 in Serie A.

The Giallorossi will hope to repeat their heroics against Barcelona in the last round by overturning a 5-2 semi-final first-leg deficit against Jurgen Klopp's men on Wednesday and found some form on home soil.

They were woeful at Anfield, but fared much better in their domestic league, winning thanks to goals from Patrik Schick, Eden Dzeko (2) and Stephan El Shaarawy.

Schick opened the scoring in the ninth minute when he swept home Dzeko's cross from the left and then the former Manchester City striker got on the scoresheet five minutes before the break by poking home Aleksandar Kolarov's centre.

Roma were reduced to 10 men when Juan Jesus was dismissed for a professional foul, but Roberto Inglese missed the resulting penalty.

El Shaarawy made the game safe with a finish into the bottom corner before Dzeko's second concluded the rout, with Inglese atoning for his earlier miss with a consolation in injury time.

Cologne's Bundesliga relegation confirmed after defeat to Freiburg

Hamburg and Freiburg boosted their survival hopes but Cologne were relegated from the Bundesliga despite a dramatic late comeback.

The Billy Goats needed to beat relegation rivals Freiburg to retain any hope of staying up but were condemned to a 3-2 defeat by Lucas Holer's stoppage-time effort.

The result was particularly harsh after Leonardo Bittencourt had scored twice in the last eight minutes to draw Cologne level after they had trailed 2-0 following Nils Petersen's brace.

The result sees Freiburg, who started the day in the bottom three after five straight defeats, climb to 14th.

Hamburg remain in the relegation places but a 3-1 win at Wolfsburg brought them to within two points of safety.

Wolfsburg will join their opponents in the bottom three on Sunday should Mainz avoid defeat against RB Leipzig.

The Wolves had failed to score in five of their last six Bundesliga games and conceded twice in the space of three minutes shortly before half-time, with Bobby Wood and Lewis Holtby putting the visitors in control.

Josip Brekalo set up an exciting finish by firing in a free-kick, but

Gian-Luca Waldschmidt put the game to bed after Filip Kostic's stoppage-time penalty had been kept out.

Champions Bayern Munich coasted to a 4-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Niklas Dorsch opened the scoring from Sandro Wagner's assist shortly before half-time, with Wagner adding a second after 76 minutes.

Sebastien Haller immediately pulled one back for Frankfurt, but Rafinha struck three minutes from time and then set up another for Niklas Sule in stoppage time.

Schalke failed to secure their place in next season's Champions League as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Borussia Monchengladbach.

Raffael put the visitors ahead after the hosts saw Nabil Bentaleb sent off after just 12 minutes for violent conduct.

Daniel Caligiuri levelled the contest with a penalty in first-half stoppage time.

Hertha Berlin produced a late comeback to snatch a 2-2 draw at home to Augsburg.

Michael Gregoritsch and Sergio Cordova put the visitors in control but

Vedad Ibisevic converted a penalty six minutes from time and three minutes later set up Davie Selke for the equaliser.

Espanyol close in on safety with point against relegated Las Palmas

Espanyol moved to within one point of safety despite being held to a 1-1 draw at home by already relegated Las Palmas at the RCDE Stadium.

Espanyol would have targeted this game for three points but had to settle for one against visitors whose fate was sealed after losing 4-0 to Alaves last weekend.

Deportivo can still catch Espanyol, but they need to win all four of their remaining fixtures and while the Periquitos lose their last three games.

Oscar Melendo wasted a great chance to give Espnayol a fifth-minute lead but his shot failed to trouble Las Palmas keeper Leandro Chichizola.

The deadlock was broken by Jonathan Calleri's penalty in the 29th minute. Espanyol defender David Lopez was adjudged to have handled the ball for Calleri to stroke the spot-kick past Pau Lopez.

Lopez had to be at his best when he denied Imoh Ezekiel three minutes into the second half.

At the other end, Sergio Garcia was off target his a header that drifted past the post.

Espanyol were denied an equaliser in the 57th minute when Gerard Moreno's header from close range hit the crossbar.

Garcia squandered another chance to get the home side back in the game when his 73rd-minute shot lacked the power to trouble Chichizola.

Chichizola was finally beaten moments later when Garcia headed the ball back across goal for Moreno to level the scores 14 minutes from time.

Neither side could find a winner and had to settle for a point, which takes Espanyol a step closer to staying in LaLiga next season.
