The achievement was the high-point of an excellent session for Robertson, who is bidding to win the UK title for a second time.
The world number three came into the match as hot favourite to beat Liang, who is currently ranked 29 and had never played in a final of snooker’s three major tournaments before.
The charismatic 28-year-old looked nervy early on, failing to punish Robertson when he missed a simple pot on the yellow as the Australian came back to clinch the opening frame.
Robertson found his rhythm with a break of 61 to take the second too but just as it looked like the contest might become one-sided, Liang hit back with a century break of 110 to reduce the gap to 2-1.
Another century, this time for Robertson, restored the two-frame lead but the 33-year-old was still making mistakes and a missed red when leading by 33 points allowed Liang to snatch the fifth for 3-2.
Robertson’s scintillating 147 had the arena in raptures moments later but Liang refused to lie down and the pair shared the final two frames to leave the match 5-3 heading into the evening session.
