Australia’s Neil Robertson fired a 147 maximum break worth £44,000 as he took a 5-3 lead over China’s Liang Wenbo in the UK Championship final.

Robertson punched the air in delight and received a standing ovation from the York Barbican Centre crowd after he secured the five-figure bonus in the sixth frame against Wenbo.

Liang also enjoyed the moment, clapping and then hugging his opponent, who now has managed three maximums in his career.

The achievement was the high-point of an excellent session for Robertson, who is bidding to win the UK title for a second time.

The world number three came into the match as hot favourite to beat Liang, who is currently ranked 29 and had never played in a final of snooker’s three major tournaments before.

The charismatic 28-year-old looked nervy early on, failing to punish Robertson when he missed a simple pot on the yellow as the Australian came back to clinch the opening frame.

Robertson found his rhythm with a break of 61 to take the second too but just as it looked like the contest might become one-sided, Liang hit back with a century break of 110 to reduce the gap to 2-1.

Another century, this time for Robertson, restored the two-frame lead but the 33-year-old was still making mistakes and a missed red when leading by 33 points allowed Liang to snatch the fifth for 3-2.

Robertson’s scintillating 147 had the arena in raptures moments later but Liang refused to lie down and the pair shared the final two frames to leave the match 5-3 heading into the evening session.
