Katie Taylor eases through first round in defence of European title

Katie Taylor has beaten Sandra Brugger of Switzerland in her first bout of the EUBC European Women's Boxing Championships today.

The Bray warrior, who had a bye in the first round, defeated her opponent in the 60kg competition in Bucharest to book a place in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Taylor started off quickly while Brugger, who was defeated by Katie in the European final in 2007, was forced to take a standing count in the opening round after being caught a few times.

The Olympic, World and European champion is attempting to capture a record sixth consecutive European title.

Michaela Walsh is through to the next round in the bantamweight division after beating Helina Bruyevigh of Belarus.
