Nevin coasts into last 16
John Joe Nevin is through to the last 16 in the bantamweight division at the Olympic Games in London. The fifth seed wasn't troubled in his first round fight, beating Denmark’s Dennis Ceylan 21-6.
Nevin will face Kanat Abutalipov of Kazakhstan in the last 16
Darren O'Neill is due to step into the ring to fight Nigerian middleweight Muideen Akanji at around 3.30pm.
Elsewhere, the three-man road cycling team of Nicolas Roche, Dan Martin and David McCann are taking part in the 250 kilometre road race, with Roche and Martin both hoping to follow-up their impressive performances at the Tour de France. The race got underway on The Mall at 10am and is expected to finish shortly after 4pm.
In rowing, Latvian-born Sanita Puspure has just qualified for the quarter finals of the women's single sculls. She finished third place in her heat in a time of 7 minutes and 49 seconds.
The equestrian has started with the dressage for both the individual and the team events with Michael Ryan and his horse Ballylynch Adventure having already competed, scoring 60.20 penalty points.
Aoife Clarke on board Master Crusade has completed her dressage programme in the last hour with a score of 49.20 penalty points, while Joseph Murray with Electric Cruise will be in action later today.
Ireland's only judo representative, Lisa Kearney, lost earlier today to China's Shugen Wu in their last 16 clash at the Excel Arena.
Kieran Behan is only the second Irish gymnast to qualify for the Game and he has already competed in the qualification for the Floor and Vault events.
Dublin's Barry Murphy was Ireland's only swimmer in action on the opening day. He finished eighth in the fourth heat in the 100m Breaststroke in a time of 61.57 seconds.
Meanwhile, China have already won the first medal in this year's Games. Siling Yi won the gold with a score of 502.9 in the womens 10 metre air rifle event at the Royal Artillery Barracks.
