Sky Television's control over broadcasting rights for sports games has been thrown into doubt after the European Court of Justice ruled that the sale of sporting rights on a country-by-country basis is in breach of EU law.

The decision has been welcomed by politicians and groups representing Irish publicans, many of whom spend more than €12,000 a year for the right to screen Premier League football.
