Irish boxer Willie 'Big Bang' Casey failed in his bid to become WBA super-bantamweight champion at Citywest in Dublin last night.

The 29-year-old’s fight bout against Cuban pugilist Guillermo Rigondeaux was stopped in the first round.

Rigondeaux, a two-time Olympic champion, won the fight in just two minutes and 38 seconds, after knocking the Limerick native to the canvas twice, both times with a left hook.

Although Casey got up and twice took a standing count, referee Stanley Christodolou was left with few options after the Irishman then took another series of punches to the head from Rigondeaux.
