Kosgei, Keitany seal Berlin wins

Kenyans Sammy Kosgei and Mary Keitany demolished the existing world records when storming to victories at the BIG 25 kilometres road race in Berlin this morning.

Kosgei posted a time of one hour 11 minutes 50 seconds to better the previous record of 1hr 12mins 45secs held by his fellow countryman Paul Kosgei.

Gilbert Kirwa, runner-up today, also beat the old record with a time of 1:11.58 while Ethiopia’s Terefe Maregu prevented a Kenyan clean sweep of the podium by finishing third in 1:13.16.

Keitany, relishing the perfect conditions, remained comfortably on world-record schedule throughout the race, finishing in 1:19.53.

Keitany’s time decimated the previous best of 1:22.13 set by Japan’s Mizuki Noguchi in 2005.

Alice Timbilili and Pasalia Kipkoech finished well behind their fellow Kenyan, posting times of 1:24.38 and 1:26.47 respectively.
