New Jersey authorities slam F1 plan

New Jersey appears to have turned its back on Formula One.

Plans had been aired to host a race at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, although swiftly ran into opposition from many sides.

Jersey City mayor Jerramiah T Healy listened to the comments of local protest groups and has now denounced the idea.

In a statement he said: “After a review of the draft proposal prepared by the city’s tourism office, I have come to the same conclusion...that this type of event is not suited for Liberty State Park.

“While we work to attract national and international events to our city, we must ensure they are appropriate and will have the least impact upon the quality of life of our residents and community.”

The plans for a grand prix to run for five years from 2012 had been aired by Destination Jersey City, an organisation funded by the city’s Economic Development Corporation in a bid to drum up tourism for the area.

Healy’s comments have been welcomed by Sam Pesin, president of the Friends of Liberty State Park, who was one of the main opponents to the scheme.

Speaking to the Jersey Journal, Pesin said: “Mayor Healy did reach out to me yesterday and we had a very constructive conversation.

“Instead of a negative wasteful controversy, we can all focus on working together on positive efforts to benefit Jersey City and Liberty State Park.”

With F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone eager to see the sport return to the United States, and to New York in particular, he will have to turn his attention elsewhere.
