Duo out of India clash

Ireland left injured pair Niall O’Brien and Trent Johnston out of their team to face India in their final ICC World Twenty20 Group A match at Trent Bridge tonight.

Both are expected to be fit, however, for the start of Ireland’s Super Eights campaign against New Zealand at the same venue tomorrow.

Wicketkeeper-batsman O’Brien is nursing an ankle tendon tear and key all-rounder Johnston a shoulder injury, both suffered in Ireland’s victory over Bangladesh in Nottingham on Monday.

Reserve wicketkeeper Gary Wilson was ready to take the gloves in O’Brien’s place – while spinner Andrew White and medium-pacer Andre Botha were the two men to come into the team.

India were set to go into the match unchanged from their opening win – also against Bangladesh here – last Saturday.

But both teams had to wait beyond the scheduled 5.30pm start time, because forecast rain was falling and the full covers were in use.

After the rain had cleared, temporarily at least, it was announced an 18-overs-a-side match would start at 6.20pm.

India won the toss and chose to bowl first.
