Ireland's first national dodgeball challenge announced

Ireland's first national dodgeball championship is to take place in the Mardyke Areana, UCC, Cork on June 6 and the UCD Sports centre, Dublin on Saturday June 13.

The Rennie Dual Action Dodgeball Challenge will see teams of six will battle against each other for a place in the final and the ultimate prize of €1,000.

Teams are also encouraged to come up with the most unique outfit they think represents their team.

A sport born on school playgrounds, the game was introduced to the mainstream by popular Ben Stiller movie 'Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story', where the fictional team were advised to "learn the five d's of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge."

According to Suzanne O’ Reilly, founder of the UCD dodgeball club: "Usually Irish dodgeball teams have to travel to the UK to take part in competitions so it is fantastic to be able to play in an Irish competition.

"Sometimes people find competitive team sports intimidating or working-out in the gym boring. Dodgeball is easy to take up and no past dodgeballing experience is necessary for the Rennie Dual Action Dodgeball Challenge. Dodgeball is the greatest sport in the world!"
