The outcome of the Fels Points Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally, the third round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship, went right down to the eighth and final stage.

Victory, by a six-second margin, was secured by defending Dunlop champions, Patrick Elliott/Paul Goodman (Subaru WRC), who reeled in Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry, also in a Subaru WRC.

Local driver, Mike Quinn in a Ford Escort, partnered by Grainne McEnry, were third.

The Group N category was by Kevin and Martin Kelleher (Mitsubishi).

Three drivers held the lead at various stages.

The first, Kevin Barrett (Subaru) led after the opening stages where he was two seconds ahead of Maguire with Elliott a further four seconds behind after he endured a spin on the stage.

Elliott and Maguire shared the lead after the second stage with Barrett third and Darren Gass (Subaru WRC) fourth.

Barrett retired when a wheel sheared off his Subaru.

Maguire moved into a six second lead on Stage 3 but Elliott responded and cut the deficit to three seconds by the end of S.S. 4.

The Cavan driver then moved into the lead on S.S. 5, albeit a second ahead of Maguire.

Gass posted fastest times through stages three and four to move into third.

On Stage 6, Maguire regained the lead and then punched in the best time for Stage 7 to extend his lead to six seconds.

Gass retired with a broken suspension strut promoting Mike Quinn's Mk. 2 Escort into third.

On the final test, Elliott had the correct tyres for the conditions and he secured his third win of the campaign.

Maguire is now six points adrift in the Dunlop series.

Quinn took a magnificent third.

Kelleher took victory in Group N where his rival, Gary Jennings (Mitsubishi) suffered clutch woes on the final stage.

Donie O'Sullivan, driving a Proton Satria Neo S200 car, finished eleventh.
