McClean makes flying start
Alan McLean made a flying start to his final round at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, but was still six shots off the pace at the Leopard Creek Golf Club today.
With the leading players yet to tee off, including round three star Thomas Aiken, who fired a course-record 61 – 18-under-par overall – to take a one-shot lead into the final day, the 38-year-old Scotsman fired five birdies in his opening seven holes to storm into seventh place.
He started with a par on the first, before picking up one shot each in all but one of his next six holes to move to five-under for the round and 13-under-par overall.
The best clubhouse score of the day came from the 2007 South African Open champion James Kingston, who went round in 66.
The Rustenburg golfer, who will be defending his national Open title next week, shot eight birdies in his final round, but a loss of concentration on the par-five 15 saw him drop two shots on his way to a tournament total of seven-under 281.
Swede Pelle Edberg also managed to complete his week in style with a round of 67 moving him to 10-under overall, while England’s Simon Dyson moved to eight-under overall after firing a bogey-free 68 in his final round for a competition total of 280.
World number 10 Lee Westwood made a quiet start to his day and remained on 10-under overall after five pars from his opening five holes.
