Joyce out of final due to illness

Reigning Irish featherweight champion David Oliver Joyce will miss tonight's Open Senior Competition final with Carl Frampton because of an illness.

Joyce, a four-time Irish senior champion from the St Michael's Athy club, had been due to face Frampton - a silver medal winner from the 2007 EU Championships - but has had to withdraw after picking up the flu.

Irish 2008 Olympic and light welterweight champion John Joe Joyce, a first cousin of David Oliver, meets Stephen Donnelly in Fridays 64Kg decider.

And reigning Irish heavyweight champ Con Sheehan clashes with Tribesman Patrick Corcoran.

Belfast middleweight Eamon O'Kane faces Stephen O'Reilly and Conor Ahern and Jimmy Moore face off in the battle of the ex senior champs.

Former Irish champion Eric Donovan will also be in the ring for an eagerly anticipated meeting with Ross Hickey while Ryan Lindberg and Shane Cox will dispute the bantamweight honours.

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association are using the Open Senior Competition as part of their selection process for next months European Senior Championships in Liverpool.

Boxing will commence at 7.30pm this evening.
