Ireland’s Gabriel Shelly won an individual bronze medal in the Boccia competition this morning.

Carlow based Shelly beat hometown favourite Yi Wang of China 6-2 to win her second medal having won gold in Sydney in 2000.

He is the Ireland’s first medalist at the 13th Paralympic Games.

While in cycling Catherine Walsh and her sighted pilot rider Joanna Hickey have set a new Irish record in the Women’s Individual Pursuit (B&VI Class) with a time of 3.50.515, shaving over 2.5 seconds off their previous best.

And Dubliner Enda Smyth was seventh in the Men’s 1km Time Trial.

Smyth was just outside his personal best in a time of 1.16.074.
