Taylor wins but Cacace bows out
Katie Taylor, the reigning World and European lightweight champion, progressed to the quarter finals of the Ahmet Comert Cup following a convincing win over reigning European light welterweight champion Lucie Bertaud in Turkey this afternoon.
Taylor, who has moved up to light welterweight for this tournament exclusively, stopped her French opponent on the 15 point rule (19-4) in round two in Istanbul.
The Bray woman, ranked number one in the World and Europe at lightweight (60Kg) for the last sixteen months, will now meet World 63Kg silver medallist Klara Svenson of Sweden in tomorrows quarter finals.
Meanwhile, Anthony Cacace, of the Oliver Plunkett club in Belfast, was today agonisingly edged out by one point in the preliminary rounds of the men's Ahmet Comert Cup by Turkish lightweight Ervel Kesen.
Darren O'Neill, of the Paulstown club in Kilkenny, and the Ulster pair of Ryan Lindberg and Carl Frampton will be in the ring for their first bouts of the tournament tomorrow.
