Glock ready to make a point

Timo Glock is confident of finally scoring his first point for Toyota after a tough baptism on his return to Formula One.

Following four grands prix with the now defunct Jordan in 2004, Glock is back in motorsport’s big time, and although he has made an impact it has not been in a way that was expected.

Glock qualified a fine ninth for Toyota in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, only to suffer two five-place grid penalties for a gearbox change and for impeding Mark Webber.

The 23-year-old then spectacularly crashed out of the race on lap 43 when his car caught a kerb and flew into the air before landing heavily, spinning twice before eventually coming to rest against a wall.

Then 10 days ago in Malaysia, Glock again qualified in the top 10 but failed to complete a lap as he was hit from behind by the Williams of Nico Rosberg, breaking his car’s rear suspension.

Toyota at least proved at the Sepang Circuit they are capable of competing this season as team-mate Jarno Trulli finished a superb fourth.

Glock is now hoping a little luck comes his way this weekend in the Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sakhir Circuit, where Toyota and Ferrari opted to test in February.

“It is very disappointing that I have not finished a race yet for Toyota, but I hope that will change in Bahrain,” said Glock.

“The accident in Malaysia was unfortunate and it stopped me fighting for points, which I am sure I could have done.

“However, I prefer to look forward and I am still positive, especially after qualifying in the top 10 for both races so far.

“The test in Bahrain went well and the information we got should help us a bit this weekend, even if the temperature seems likely to be quite a bit hotter than when we were last there.

“The car has also improved quite a bit since that test, but there is still work to do to adjust it to my driving style.

“Obviously, my first target is to finish the race after my bad luck in the first two races.

“But I think I can again reach Q3 and hopefully finish in the top eight for the first time.”

Naturally, Italian Trulli would love nothing more than to repeat his “fantastic result” in Malaysia, but he appreciates “it will not be easy.”

“We will need another perfect weekend,” insisted Trulli.

“But we have shown the new car is a big improvement and we are able to challenge for the top six.

“We had a productive test in Bahrain in February, so I expect to be competitive and score more points.”
