Three rounds enough for Dunne to defend crown

Dubliner Bernard Dunne defended his EBU European Super Bantamweight title with aplomb as he stopped Yersin Jailauov of Kazakhstan in the third round at a sold-out Point Depot tonight.

Referee Giuseppe Quartarone stopped the fight after a minute and 57 seconds of the third round as Dunne dominated from the off.

Jailauov was sent reeling to the canvas by a left uppercut-left hook combination, he took the count but the referee stepped in just moments later after a superb right hand from the champion.

The win was the 23rd straight win of the Neilstown man’s professional career.

Dunne said of his opponent afterwards: “He was hard to pin down, he’s a strong fighter. It was about patience and trying to catch him with that one shot.”

A fight against unbeaten Spanish fighter Kiko Martinez, who is the mandatory challenger, is likely to be next up for Dunne, whose promoter Brian Peters wants to happen before the renovations begin at the Point Depot.
