The Italian started in second behind Dani Pedrosa but overtook him on the opening lap and held onto top spot until the end.

Pedrosa's Honda was second with Rossi's Yamaha team-mate Colin Edwards in third.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland's Eugene Laverty finished 15th in the 250cc at Jerez this morning. He was 1 minute 11.7 seconds behind winner Jorge Lorenzo from Spain.

Meanwhile, Italian Roberto Locatelli remains in a serious condition in Cadiz hospital after an horrific accident in yesterday's 250cc practice.
