Pakistan fined for Ireland go-slow

Pakistan’s misery at being knocked out of the World Cup by Ireland has been compounded with the team being fined for a slow over rate during their shock three-wicket defeat in Jamaica yesterday.

Captain Inzamam-ul-Haq was the most severely punished, deducted 90% of his match fee after Pakistan were four overs short of their target.

With the shortfall being more than two overs, Inzamam, as captain, was automatically charged with a level two code of conduct breach.

He denied the charge but ICC match referee Chris Broad found him guilty in a hearing after the match and Inzamam was fined 50% of his match fee for the breach – the minimum for a level two offence – as well as a further 40% of his match fee for the shortfall.

That latter fine was imposed as the captain is automatically fined 10% of his match fee for every over his side fails to bowl in the time allocated.

Pakistan’s other players were each fined 5% of their fees for every over, therefore losing 20% of their fees.

Inzamam has the right of appeal against his level two charge but it must be lodged in writing before the end of today.
