Seventh hell for Hession

Paul Hession was never in contention as Jason Gardener roared to a fourth successive 60 metres gold medal in the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham.

Hession smashed his national record on Saturday but failed to reproduce that form in the final and finished seventh in 6.68 seconds.

Gardener’s time of 6.51secs saw him finish ahead of fellow Briton Craig Pickering and European record holder Ronald Pognon.

Mary Cullen was ninth in the 3,000m as Lidia Chojecks became the first woman to win the 3,000m and 1,500m double.

Cullen recorded a time of 9:00.42s as the 30-year-old Polish victor clocked 8:43.25s, winning ahead of Spain’s Marta Dominguez and Silvia Weissteiner from Italy.

James Nolan was disqualified as Juan Carlos Higuero led a Spanish clean sweep of the 1,500m medals when clinching a narrow victory in 3:44.41.
