O'Rourke breezes through to semi-finals
Ireland’s Derval O’Rourke has breezed into tomorrow’s 100 metres hurdles semi-finals.
The world indoor 60m gold medallist produced a solid second position in her heat to take a big step in her bid to collect a second major medal.
O’Rourke, troubled by injury since her unexpected world indoor victory in Moscow, finished 0.09seconds behind Russian winner Aleksandr Antonova who clocked 12.94sec.
But the 25-year-old Cork athlete will need no reminding the field is highly competitive, with Sweden’s Susanna Kallur, the fastest qualifier winning in 12.70sec.
After setting the pace in his 800m race Dave Campbell slipped backwards in the sprint for the line, placing sixth in 1:48.70.
Thomas Chamney, fifth in his competition in a time of 1min 50.12sec, also failed to progress.
