Murphy targets top spot
Crucible champion Shaun Murphy wants to establish himself at the top of the world rankings after modifying his all-round game in the past 12 months.
The 23-year-old made it through to the second round of the 888.com World Championship in Sheffield after defeating James Wattana, although he only recorded two half-century breaks.
Rotherham-based Murphy was not concerned about a lack of break building – the hallmark of his victory a year ago – and believes a slight change in his tactical approach makes him an even tougher prospect to face.
“Being world champion is only one of the things I want to achieve – I also want to be world number one, to be that person I need to improve my all-round game,” he said.
“I’ve had a fantastic year but I don’t want to stop there, I want to see my name at the top of the rankings.
“I do want to become a complete player, not just a break builder who can’t play safe. I’m happy to be the all-rounder.”
Murphy is still suffering from the effects of a chest infection but remains confident ahead of his second-round clash on Thursday.
“If I feel a lot better and get my scoring boots on, I could cause some damage,” he added.
