Limerick Lions 95 Roma St. Vincent’s 92
Limerick Lions emerged with the two points on offer in a close encounter against St Vincent’s at the UL arena last night.
Limerick held on in a very tight finish to win the game by 3 points, 95 to 92.
Both teams started well and were hitting lots of shots. Limerick edged ahead in the first quarter but Vincents dug in and closed the quarter well to lead by 7 points 35 to 28.
The second quarter was close, and Limerick pulled the game back to level terms and, in a shot for shot trade off, the game went to half time with Limerick ahead by 2 points, 52 to 50.
The third quarter was again a good battle and only two points separated the teams going into the last few minutes, with Vincents ahead by 2, on a score line of 72 to 70.
In the last quarter Limerick again edged ahead a little, but were pegged back and with less than one minute on the clock the game was tied up at 92 points apiece.
Limerick ran their offence and Jon Steven capped a great performance by landing a 2 pointer with 12 seconds to go.
Vincent’s chased down the court looking for the equaliser or the win, but Limerick’s Robert Taylor got his hands to a pass and stole the ball.
He was fouled and hit one of the free throws to leave Limerick up by 3 with 9 seconds left.
Vincent’s worked the remaining seconds to get a shot for a ‘three’, that was again blocked by Robert Taylor, who had a big big last minute for Limerick.
The buzzer went and Limerick had the win in a close encounter.
Vincent’s had big performances from Emmet and Dave Donnelly, Phil Taylor, Jackson, Flynn, and Darling.
For Limerick Jon Steven hit a match winning 40 points, ably supported by Robert Taylor with those last minute steals and 21 points. Robert Lynch and Ger Myles also impressed for Limerick.
Limerick are back at home next Saturday th Nov 12 against Tralee Tigers with a 7.30pm start.
