Holmes says she'll be ready for Cork date

Kelly Holmes is confident she has overcome a minor injury problem and will be in top shape before competing at the Cork BUPA Ireland City Games next weekend.

Holmes, who won her first 1500 metres of the season at the Norwich Union International meeting earlier this month in Glasgow, then felt a recurrence of an old Achilles injury.

As a precautionary measure the Olympic 800m and 1500m champion reluctantly pulled out of the European Cup First League match last weekend in Leiria.

Holmes has been undergoing light training in Valencia after having rested for several days following the Achilles flare-up in Scotland.

Now she expects to be fully fit to take her place at the Cork event on July 2 - Ireland’s major track and field meeting of the summer - where she is expected to compete over 1500m.

ā€œThe Achilles is a lot better. Initially I had to take four days off but since I started running again I haven’t felt anything and everything has been okay,ā€ said Holmes.

Holmes still intends to compete in August’s World Championships where she won silver in the 800m two years ago in Paris and the 35-year-old got some good news when her physiotherapist Alison Rose arrived earlier this week.
