Former World Rally champion, Colin McRae will drive his Mk. 2 Ford Escort as one of the course cars on today’s Ordnance Survey Ireland Gleneagle Hotel Rally of the Lakes, the third round of the Pirelli Irish Tarmac Championship.
Last evening, the Scot drew a crowd of some 5,000 spectators to the Killarney Racecourse where he displayed his driving skills on the Super Special stage.
Today’s opening stage is Moll’s Gap and huge crowds are expected at the summit off one of Ireland most famous stages.
Meanwhile, with four former winners in the top four, the rally is expected to be yet another classic in Killarney.
Double Irish Tarmac champion, Andrew Nesbitt in his McKinstry run Subaru is the top seed and will be followed by joint Irish Tarmac champions, Derek McGarrity (Subaru) and Eugene Donnelly (Toyota Corolla).
Last week’s winner of the Rally of Wales, Austin MacHale drives his Ford Focus WRC.
The top ten also features Peadar Hurson, Eamonn Boland Tim NcNulty, Kevin Lynch and Denis Cronin - all in Subaru WRC's.
Today’s first leg consists of eight stages including two runs over Moll’s Gap. Servicing is in Millstreet after stages 2 and 6, service after stage six is at Glenflesk.
