Golden girl Kelly tracks more Olympic glory
British golden girl Kelly Holmes will be aiming for a second Olympic title when she runs today after her sensational win in the 800-metre final in Athens.
Holmes, 34, who won gold after a thrilling race, runs later today in the 1,500-metre heats.
She put the smile back on the faces of British sports fans after the disappointment and despair of Paula Radcliffe’s marathon agony.
Holmes took gold after a sensational race cheered on by thousand of British fans in the Olympic Stadium.
Her incredible win means she becomes one of the “Magnificent Seven” – the number of British women who have taken a track and field gold medal.
“I dreamt of this moment every day of my athletics career,” said Holmes afterwards.
“When I decided to give it my shot, I just had to go for it regardless of what happened and hold on to the last. It was a hard battle for the last 50 metres but I just dug in, and drove for the finish line.
“I kind of crossed the line and thought I had won then thought maybe I haven’t. Everybody was there, I had to wait for the screen then somebody shouted from the side I had won and I just could not believe it.
“When I crossed the line I could not believe it. I wanted it for so long, and I’ve dreamt about it so much, so I was shocked that it all worked out.”
