Trulli holds lead from pole
Jarno Trulli made the most of his first-ever pole position to lead early in the Monaco Grand Prix as Renault dominated the start.
Trulli got away well to lead and team-mate Fernando Alonso nipped past Jenson Button’s BAR to move into second, with the Englishman third.
The first start was aborted due to a problem on the grid, forcing the cars to perform another parade lap and delaying the getaway by six minutes.
Olivier Panis’ Toyota had lined up in the wrong position, causing the problem and the Frenchman’s woes were compounded when he stalled attempting to start the second warm-up lap.
Trulli’s Renault appeared to be leaking fluid but he got away fine as Takuma Sato made a storming getaway to leap from seventh to fourth, pushing Michael Schumacher down to sixth.
Christian Klien’s race ended halfway round the first lap when the Austrian ran into a Jordan and then into a tyre barrier.
