O'Sullivan triumphs in Manchester

Sonia O’Sullivan scored one of the best wins of her international career in today’s BUPA Great Manchester Run.

O’Sullivan outsprinted defending champion Berhane Adere of Ethiopia to win the 10-kilometre race in 32 minutes 12 seconds.

Adere finished three seconds behind O’Sullivan with Margaret Okayo, winner of last month’s Flora London Marathon, third in 32mins 24secs.

Tracey Morris, the fun runner who gained selection for the Olympic Games marathon after becoming the first Briton home in London, was 11th in 33mins 53secs.

Hayley Yelling, also selected to run the marathon in Athens, was the first domestic runner across the finishing line. Yelling claimed eighth position in 33mins 01secs which delighted the Bedford runner.

The men’s race saw Craig Mottram again prove he is currently the world’s leading distance runner.

The Australian won by five seconds ahead of Zersenay Tadesse of Eridrea with third place going to Ireland’s Cathal Lombard.

David Weir won the wheelchair event in 22mins 30secs ahead of Velocity club-mate Tushar Patel, whose time was 22mins 56secs. Wakefield’s Jason Richards finished third in 26mins 26secs.

The women’s event saw Francesca Posellato from Italy given the verdict ahead Shelly Woods from Blackpool, both women clocking the same time of 26mins 28secs. Rachel Potter of Belle Vue Racers was third in 26mins 36secs.
