Fordham shakes off nearly-man tag
Andy Fordham has often been described as the “Jimmy White of darts” after several failed bids to win the world crown – but the gentle giant can finally throw that tag away now.
Snooker star White, one of the game’s most naturally-gifted players, has lost in six world finals during his long career.
And Fordham, a big fan of the ‘Whirlwind’, must have felt his chance for title glory had slipped away after losing out in four semi-finals at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green.
However, the 41-year-old produced the performance of his life to fight back from 4-2 down against defending champion Raymond van Barneveld and book his place in the final of the Lakeside World Championship.
Many people questioned whether Fordham would have been able to recover in time to seriously challenge Mervyn King less than 24 hours later.
But he looked relaxed and refreshed from the outset and went on to seal a six-sets-to-three win over the number three seed last night.
“I was being called the Jimmy White of the darts scene,” admitted Fordham, who finally ended a 10-year wait for the top prize.
“To be labelled with that didn’t really bother me because Jimmy is such a great character and player.
“It wasn’t a bad thing, but to get to the final was brilliant – and to go on and win it is just fantastic.
“I just told myself to relax, take your time and treat it like every other game.
“It’s hard because it’s the world final, but you have to try and stay focused.”
Fordham, who is one of the most popular players on the BDO circuit, also insisted he will not get carried away by his stunning success.
“The only thing that will change is my bank balance,” added Fordham, who picked up a cheque for £50,000 (€72,219).
“It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever done, but I’ll just enjoy the rest of the year as world champion.”
