Piquet to continue test

Brazil’s Nelson Piquet junior, the son of the former world champion, will resume his maiden Formula One test tomorrow after doing a ’competent’ job on his debut.

The 18-year-old yesterday completed 65 laps in a Williams-BMW car at Jerez in Spain with his father, who won one of his three world title with Williams in 1987, watching from the sidelines.

“Nelson did a competent job for his first outing,” said Sam Michael, Williams’ chief operations engineer.

Piquet, whose track time was curtailed by a gearbox problem and lapped around three seconds slower than regular driver Ralf Schumacher, said: “That was not bad at all. I thought it would be more difficult than it was.

“I actually found it easier than the F3000 car I drove here recently. It’s nice not having to take your hands off the steering wheel.”

Nico Rosberg, son of Finland’s 1982 world champion Keke, is testing for Williams today.
