World marathon record holder Paula Radcliffe was surprisingly beaten into third place in the Chiba International Ekiden Relay when she ran the first leg for Great Britain.

World marathon record holder Paula Radcliffe was surprisingly beaten into third place in the Chiba International Ekiden Relay when she ran the first leg for Great Britain.

After leading the first seven kilometres in her 10km stint in the marathon relay , Radcliffe fell behind African runners Berhane Adere and Lucy Wangui, who like herself both bettered the previous stage record of 30 minutes 50 seconds.
