Formula One bosses are today bracing themselves for a head-on clash with the European Union in a row over tobacco advertising.

The sport’s world governing body the FIA yesterday revealed it was scrapping plans to ban tobacco advertising from the end of the 2006 season as their dispute with the EU escalated.
