Raikkonen emerges victorious from chaotic GP

Kimi Raikkonen was handed his second grand prix victory in Brazil today in an incident-packed race at Interlagos.

After several safety car periods on a wet track, the race was prematurely ended after Renault’s Fernando Alonso piled into the wreckage of Mark Webber’s Jaguar following an accident.

The Spaniard initially staggered out of the car but was then tended to by paramedics and carted away from the scene by an ambulance.

That left Jordan’s Giancarlo Fisichella celebrating victory but race organisers swiftly amended the results and Raikkonen was declared the winner.

Initially, officials had thought the result would be determined by the order on the last completed lap but that was amended to list the result as the standings two laps prior to the stoppage.

That meant Raikkonen was the winner, taking his second victory in succession after breaking his duck in Malaysia last time out and extending his lead in the drivers’ championship.

Fisichella was demoted to second while Alonso was handed third place.
