Snooker: Teenage test for Fisher
Kelly Fisher is just two matches away from an amazing Grand Slam - but she faces a tough test in the first against the young pretender of ladies snooker.
Stourbridge’s Fisher will meet Dudley’s 16-year-old Reanne Evans in the semi-finals of the Ladies Embassy World Championship tomorrow at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
Having won all seven ranking tournaments so far this season, 23-year-old Fisher is within touching distance of a unique clean sweep. She has won the world title three times before, but lost to Sharon Dickson in the last 16 in 2001.
Teenage talent Evans is playing in a ranking event for the first time but stormed through the group stages at Jesters Snooker Club in Swindon to reach the last 32.
She then beat Valerie Finnie 4-0, Juliette Lushey 4-1 with a break of 54 and - in the quarter-finals - world No 2 Lynette Horsburgh 4-3.
The prolific Fisher, meanwhile, cruised through to the last four without dropping a frame with wins over Tina Owen-Sevilton, Christine Sharpe and Debbie Reynolds - knocking in runs of 80, 75, 67 and 52 along the way.
In the other semi-final, defending champion Lisa Quick will take on Belgium’s Wendy Jans - runner-up in the Regal Welsh in January.
Quick recorded 4-0 victories over Kathy Howden and Jenny Poulter then beat Katie Henrick 4-2 in the quarters with a break of 80. Jans beat fourth seed June Banks 4-1, Margaret Gorski 4-0 and fifth seed Lisa Ingall 4-3.
The semi-finals begin at 9.30am and the final will be on Sunday.
