F1: Coulthard turns up the heat on Schumacher

David Coulthard turned up the heat on Michael Schumacher after being left hot and bothered by the boiling temperatures in Kuala Lumpur.

The 30-year-old Scot finished the opening day of free practice for the Malaysian Grand Prix second in the time-sheets behind McLaren team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.

Coulthard recovered after being bottom at the end of the first practice session, when he was forced to push his broken down car for around a mile with the temperature topping 37 degrees Centigrade.

Mechanics also toiled in the heat to fix the car so Coulthard could get out early in the second session.

That session nearly came to a halt when he skidded into the gravel, but he managed to keep the car running and get back on the circuit.

Coulthard eventually finished 0.6 secs adrift of Raikkonen, who followed up his maiden podium in Melbourne on his McLaren debut with another impressive performance.

Championship leader Schumacher, who had been quickest in first practice, dropped to third - just over a second behind.

The German's brother Ralf was fourth quickest for Williams-BMW, with Mika Salo fifth in the Toyota.

Juan Pablo Montoya was sixth in his Williams, with Rubens Barrichelo seventh after his Ferrari stopped on the track.

Jenson Button was the next best Brit in eighth spot, while Allan McNish posted a promising 11th best time in the Toyota.

It was another difficult day for Eddie Irvine, who was 20th in the ailing Jaguar Racing car - one place behind the Minardi of home hero Alex Yoong.
