Rugby: MacKinnion forced to quit

Former Scotland A international Donnie Mackinnon has been forced to retire from the game because of a serious knee injury.

The 30-year-old back row forward won the Heineken Cup with Northampton before joining Edinburgh in June 2000 where he captained the Scottish team.

But Mackinnon admits that he can take great pride from his career despite the ‘‘frustrating’’ end.

‘‘It is really frustrating and annoying to finish my career on such a low note,’’ said Mackinnon.

‘‘I had worked really hard during the summer and was fitter and stronger than ever before.

‘‘However, I have been lucky enough to play professional rugby for seven seasons around the world and have some great memories and made many friends.

‘‘The highlight was undoubtedly winning the Heineken Cup with Northampton. I am only sorry I cannot contribute any more to Edinburgh as a player.

‘‘It is a great set-up with a lot of good youngsters coming through who I am sure will benefit from the experience and know-how of new signings Todd Blackadder and Brendan Laney. I wish them all the best in the future.’’

Edinburgh Gunners team manager Ian Rankin believes he has lost a vital component of his squad.

‘‘I really feel for Donnie. It is the most wretched way to finish a playing career and I know how frustrated he is at being unable to continue playing at a relatively young age,’’ said Mackinnon.

‘‘He was a really good influence on the squad and brought a hard edge to the pack and a professional approach from his time at Northampton.

‘‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his contribution to the development of Edinburgh Rugby over the past two seasons, his presence has helped us evolve as a club.

‘‘And I would like to wish him and his wife Jenny and son Jesse the very best of luck in the future.’’
