Soccer: McCarthy wins top Tipp award

Republic of Ireland international football manager Mick McCarthy was last night honoured as winner of the Canon Hayes National Sports Award at a glittering gala banquet in Dundrum House, Co Tipperary.

He beat off Tipperary hurling captain Tommy Dunne and top horseracing trainer Aidan O'Brien for the award, which was accepted by team physio Mick Byrne - McCarthy is in Japan making preparations for the 2002 World Cup.
